John Goldthorp

John is the owner of Fix Your Run, a specialized fitness coaching business that not only helps runners break through frustrating plateaus and injury cycles, but also helps people build sustainable fitness for a lifetime. Named "Philly's Best Running Coach" by Philadelphia Magazine and featured in Runners WorldPhilly.com, MensJournal.com, WHYY Philadelphia, and the Wall Street Journal, John is currently based in Park City, Utah and provides online coaching and movement assessment services to clients around the world. Along with Kari Smith, he co-founded Philly Surge Running in 2014, a positive, supportive, performance oriented training club which aims to have fun while getting faster.

As a competitive runner, John, a certified personal trainer and running coach, realized most runners will likely encounter injury at some point along their journey. While many running coaches can develop a solid training plan, John has successfully integrated run coaching with cutting edge strength and movement training which allow his clients to rack up long, uninterrupted blocks of training - the secret to getting faster over time.

In addition to his B.S. in Kinesiology from Penn State (’00), he's an Anatomy in Motion practitioner which enables him to accurately assess a runner’s biomechanics and unravel movement compensations that are often the root of many movement related problems like pain or tightness. He is a certified ACE Personal Trainer, a Functional Movement Screen Expert, a Road Runner Club of America certified running coach, and Precision Nutrition Level 1 certified.

Rachel Sandler

Rachel started her coaching career in 2010 as a Cross Country and Track & Field coach at Bryn Mawr College. After several years of bouncing around in a corporate rut post-college, she decided to follow her passion for running and become a coach! Rachel ran mid-distance at Central High School in Philadelphia and then at Haverford College, where she graduated in 2005. Presently, she loves to compete in the 800-meter dash, mile, and 5k, but after running her first marathon here in Philly in November 2021 (and qualifying for Boston), she has also found much joy in training for and coaching the longer events.

In addition to coaching Surge, Rachel also coaches clients both virtually and in-person via her run coaching business The Efficient Runner. She is USATF Level I certified and First Aid/CPR certified. In 2013, she received her masters degree in Sport Management at Drexel University. Her thesis, entitled Disordered Eating Among Female Collegiate Athletes: Positive Communication Strategies for Coaches, won the Outstanding Graduate Thesis award.

Rachel can be found running up and down the Schuylkill River Trail, playing at the park with her two sons, or eating baked goods with her husband at a coffee shop.
